Brett Zandes, CEO
At heart, I am a teacher, coach, and troubleshooter. I can remember my first experience as a trouble shooter when I was in fourth grade. I had a teacher who was brand new to the profession—we were her first classroom. I really liked her and wanted to help her out. So, I offered my two-cents on what could be done in the classroom to help the overall culture of the room. I went through different aspects of our classroom offering my thoughts. As I reflect on that experience, although she did try a few of my suggestions, I am sure she didn’t appreciate my troubleshooting efforts. I am grateful that this is less the case now.
As a certificated teacher, I started my career as the instructor for 18 special day middle schoolers. I know they learned some things from me, but that pales in comparison to what I learned from them. I learned how to listen, to make sense of not only the spoken words but the meaning behind those words. I learned that there is value and worth in every human being and we need to embrace our differences. I also learned that finding happiness and becoming all you can be, matters a great deal.
Leaving my special day class I became the P.E. instructor (along with two peers) for the entire middle school, over 1,200 pupils. I’m sure we taught health and wellness, skills for specific sports and the schema for being a competitor. What I had confirmed for me was the importance of systems thinking and organization. I practiced setting things up in systemic ways and discovered I was much more efficient and effective. I was able to apply and enhance those lessons when I became the director of my district’s AmeriCorps program and our Expanded Learning Program at all ten sites
Growing up, I always dreamed of three things: the opportunity to help others, being accomplished, and being financially secure. As a former K-12 educator and currently as a part time consultant trainer who provides guidance, coaching and support for others to reach their full potential, I have had the opportunity to help, impact and influence others by being a positive role model and mentor.
I have enjoyed personal success and fed my passion to be the best at something through sports as both an athlete (ultimately claiming 8th place as a decathlete in California which led to receiving a scholarship to a four-year university) and as a coach (52-2 best year record). Although I enjoyed these successes, I knew I was never going to be the super-star I desired.
As I was facing this reality, I became fascinated with the opportunity to accomplish all my goals through the financial information. As a result, BTZ23 was launched.
Governing Principles
“You have to ''be'' before you can ''do,'' and do before you can “have.” Zig Ziglar
The purpose of BTZ23 is to provide information so others may find a personal niche in the arena of financial well-being and supports them as they become problem solvers and planners of their own, and their families’ future. Our passion is to help others to maximize their financial potential, both in making and saving money.
To ensure that BTZ23 accomplishes its purpose, BTZ23 operates on the following governing principles:
- Excellence is the desired state.
- A powerful vision is essential.
- Planning, laying out the blueprints for success, is essential, both for the long and the short term.
- Structures and systems are in place to facilitate and “make easier” the work of our associates.
- Establishing clear expectations through checklists, protocols, rubrics and other tools helps keep us on track.
- Holding people accountable for doing good work begins with yourself and is a necessary part of creating a culture of excellence.
- 360o input and feedback is essential to maximize growth.
- Continuous improvement occurs when regular assessments and feedback are analyzed to determine how to strengthen BTZ23 and its position in the financial services arena.
Striving for Brilliance
- Brilliance occurs when people come together to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. BTZ23 is committed to striving for a culture that supports teamwork and mutual development. To ensure that this culture thrives, BTZ23 focuses on the building of relationships, creating buy-in, and developing the capacity and competency of people to be successful individually and collectively to build the future for themselves they desire.
- We believe that the only way to build quality relationships is through time, care, and belief. We have developed not only the systems and structures to operate the company but also to train, coach and mentor our people. We take care to ensure people have the back-office support and the other products and tools they need to do an excellent job with recruits, clients and one another. We maintain “unconditional positive regard” for one another and believe in the ability of people to do excellent work in representing themselves, their clients, and this company.
- We create buy-in through our structures and systems which allow us to receive 360o input and feedback. Our standing and ad hoc committees, as well as opportunities for agents and associates to share testimonials, create group memories, and participate in regularly scheduled meetings, ensure this input and feedback.
- We are committed to the growth of the company and believe that this can best be achieved by encouraging and supporting the growth of individual agents and associates. Trouble Shooting, Best Practices, Trainings, meetings, and seminars are routinely scheduled to allow agents and associates to network with one another and to learn from the success stories of others and to discuss the best practices in the industry.

FAQ’s
How did you get started in this business?
I retired and soon discovered I was bored and needed a new challenge. I had always been interested in finance and began by reading a number of articles and other materials. Then I discovered podcasts and other auditory ways of gathering information. (My best learning modality is auditory.) As I listened to numerous financial experts (across a wide spectrum of experience and beliefs) I started to gain information and realized I needed to learn not only about the past, but the future—which includes cryptocurrency and blockchain technology. Then, since I am a teacher at heart, I decided I wanted to share this information with others.
Why do you say this information is for entertainment purposes only?
Nobody knows your situation beter than you do. You may have some blind spots for whatever the reason. I share my journey with you, what I’ve learned, and hopefully you will find it helpful for yourself and fill in a blind spot or two. But I do not give financial advice, simply provide a message of my understanding.
What do you believe is the first step toward financial freedom?
I think the first step is to truly understand your current reality. I think you do this by becoming very intentional in your examination of this reality, then making decisions around whether you are content with where you are and where you will be 50 years from now or if you want to make some changes.
